I alter the single centered blade at one end into a spear point shaped carving blade. In cross section, it is flattened to a wedge shape. Both surfaces flattened (not hollow ground) from back of blade to cutting edge. The micro-bevel is from stropping only. This blade is designed to cut soft wood. (Hard wood will require a wider and more blunt bevel).
The blades on the opposite end are changed to a 1/16" wide VEE and a shallow gouge with 3/32 inch radius.
All blades are tucked into the handle, so there are no projecting blades to be uncomfortable. All sharp corners except for cutting edges are smoothed for comfort.
If You check at www.buckknives.com you will see the price for an unaltered 301 is $46, which is less than $25 labor per blade for the alteration.
This does not take into consideration the other alterations to the knife which I do to make the knife more comfortable to carve with.
